Why people leave the Been apps
We read the App Store and Google Play reviews of all four. The same complaints come up again and again.
- Features moved behind a paywall. After REBR rebuilt its app in July 2026, regions that used to be free now need Premium, and Google Play reviewers were not happy about it.
- Paid features that didn't work, or vanished. Buyers of Prostachki's lifetime Premium reported US cities greyed out or placed in the wrong state (2025), and one lost the purchase entirely, with "restore" doing nothing (July 2026).
- Pay before you can use it. Pham Van Huy's app asks for a subscription up front, and reviewers mention nonstop pop-ups to pay (spring 2026).
- No sync between devices. VINCI's app has an iCloud switch, but a reviewer found nothing syncs unless you export on one device and import on the other (August 2026).
- Missing cities, with no way to add them. Reported for VINCI's app (May 2026) and Prostachki's (July 2026).
- Logging everything by hand. One VINCI reviewer asked for exactly what the Been apps don't do: log places automatically from GPS, instead of spending hours ticking long lists (May 2026).
- Same name, different app. An Android user installed Prostachki's "been" thinking it was the one they had on iPhone, and found it was not.
| What reviewers ask for | What BeenEverywhere does |
|---|---|
| Log places automatically | Detects visits in the background and scans your photo library, on your phone |
| Sync across devices | One account, synced live between iPhone, iPad, Mac and the web |
| Any city, not a curated list | Any city, town or village on OpenStreetMap |
| No paywalls, no lost purchases | Nothing to buy: no Premium, no subscription, no ads |
| Keep my data safe | Export to XLSX, CSV or KML at any time |

FAQ
Is BeenEverywhere the same as the Been app? No. BeenEverywhere is a separate app by a different developer. There are at least four unrelated apps called "been", made by VINCI APPS, REBR AS, Prostachki Ltd and Pham Van Huy.
Which "been" app is the original? "been" by VINCI APPS, first released in July 2013 and earlier published by Apparata AB. It has the most App Store ratings of the group (about 10,000 in the US).
What is the best Been travel app alternative? If you want automatic logging, a web version, or everything free with no ads, BeenEverywhere. If you mainly need a native Android app, REBR's or Prostachki's "been".
Is there a free Been app without ads or subscriptions? All four Been apps are free to download but sell Premium; three of them offer weekly or yearly subscriptions, and VINCI's and REBR's show ads. BeenEverywhere has no in-app purchases and no ads.
Can a Been app find the countries I've visited from my photos? None of the four Been apps advertise photo import. BeenEverywhere scans your photo library's location data on your phone and fills in your map automatically.
Does BeenEverywhere work on Android? Not as a native app yet. The full web app works in any Android browser and syncs live with the iOS app.
What are "historic/travel regions"? The Been apps split countries into administrative units: states, provinces, counties, municipalities. Those borders are drawn for running a country, not for visiting it. Slovenia, for example, has 212 municipalities, but travelers know it as 6 regions. BeenEverywhere uses those historic regions, the same ones tourist boards and travel guides like Bradt, Lonely Planet, Wikitravel and Wikivoyage are built on, so ticking off a region means you've seen a distinct part of the country.
Can I move my data from a Been app to BeenEverywhere? BeenEverywhere imports any XLS, XLSX or CSV file and detects the columns itself. Prostachki's "been" can export a plain-text copy of your data; check the other apps' own export options before switching.
